The Book of Mormon

President Ezra Taft Benson, April 1986 Opening Session (Sustained as President of the Church) stated regarding the Book of Mormon:

• Unless we read the Book of Mormon and give heed to its teachings, the Lord has stated...that the whole Church is under condemnation...we have felt that scourge and judgment. (DC 84:54-58)

• We not only need to say more about the Book of Mormon, but we need to do more with it.

• The Book of Mormon has not been, nor is yet, the center of our personal study, family teaching, preaching, and missionary work. Of this we must repent.

• Quoted Pres. Romney, CR 4/60, pp 110-113: "I feel certain that if, in our homes, parents will read from the Book of Mormon prayerfully and regularly, both by themselves and with their children, the spirit of that great book will come to permeate our homes and all who dwell therein. The spirit of reverence will increase; mutual respect and consideration for each other will grow. The spirit of contention will depart. Parents will counsel their children in greater love and wisdom. Children will be more responsive and submissive to that counsel. Righteousness will increase. Faith, hope, and charity--the pure love of Christ--will abound in our homes and lives, bringing in their wake peace, joy, and happiness."
