BURDENS/AFFLICTIONS/ADVERSITY

In our Family Home Evening lesson this week we talked about the burdens we all carry. Many of us have physical or emotional burdens or burdens that are imposed on us by others and we have absolutely no control over them. We might wonder what we did to deserve our "lot in life" if we are heavily burdened with one problem after another. Sometimes life just doesn't seem fair; but, as pointed out in our lesson, burdens/afflictions/adversities are sometimes the very things that make great people great. People dealing with their burdens or afflictions may have been given opportunities they may not have otherwise received. They may have developed strengths that other people do not have. They may have mastered a higher degree of understanding or empathy that others don't have.

While in Liberty Jail, Joseph Smith was comforted in his afflictions when the Lord said to him, "My son, peace be unto your soul; thine adversity and thine afflictions shall be but a small moment; and then, if thou endure it well, God shall exalt thee on high. . ." (D&C 121:7-8)

As we all struggle with the burdens of this life, let us remember that we have been promised by the Lord that He will help us, ". . .look unto God with firmness of mind, and pray unto him with exceeding faith, and he will console you in your afflictions. . ." (Jacob 3:1)
